Medical and Aesthetic Achievements of Nose Job

Nose surgery or rhinoplasty is frequently done to reconstruct the shape, restore the functions or to improve the appearance of nose. In some cases it aims to correct nasal impairments and in others it is done to make a person beautiful. The procedure of rhinoplasty involves making an incision, separating the soft tissues from bones, correcting them as required, suturing back the incisions and applying a stent to make the treated area less mobile.

Candidacy criteria for nose surgery

You need to provide your brief medical history to your plastic surgeon along with a complete log of aesthetic and functional nasal problems, their duration, drugs used and drugs abused. The surgeon determines the physical and psychological health of the patient and evaluates if you can go through the post-operative stress and depression. Because no matter how direly you want to change the shape of your nose, you are most likely to experience depression on seeing your nose swollen and in a stent. Surgeon records your skin type, current surgical scars and the aesthetic appearance of the nose and a number of tests are performed to identify nasal deformities.

Medical achievements of nose surgery

Lesions due to skin cancer: Skin cancer defects (lesions) are often treated through rhinoplasty. In such cases healing process of the patient depends upon the patient’s age and the extent of surgery.

Traumatic nasal defects: although traumas usually do not cause a nasal injury, sometimes they cause nasal defects that are treated under reconstructive rhinoplasty.

Congenital deformities: a wide range of inborn defects in bone, cartilage or skin of the nose are treated through rhinoplasty. Cleft lip and cleft palate is a frequently treated congenital deformity.

Obstructed airways: nose job corrects pinched nose and obstructed airways that were caused due to over-trimming of nasal cartilage in a previous cosmetic rhinoplasty.

Perforated septum: noses that bear a saddling appearance due to a collapsed septum or autoimmune diseases are also treated through nose jobs.

Aesthetic achievements of rhinoplasty

You can ask your surgeon to show you some nose surgery before and after pictures of previous patients. Following are some examples of achievements of rhinoplasty that enlist how patients look before the surgery and how their nose shapes are altered through surgery:

rhinoplasty sd

Before

After

Nose with a round tip

Smaller and projected nose tip

Crooked or disproportionate nose

Straightening of nose, correction of tip, a droopy effect can also be created.

Wide tip and enlarge nostrils

Projected tip and narrow nostrils

Less projected nose with a hanging nasal septum or columella

Projected tip and lesser hanging

Nasal twist and wide tip

Straightening of twist and projected tip

Hump and boxy tip

Projected tip and reduced hump

Collapsed tip due to a bad rhinoplasty

Projected tip with narrow nose

Risks associated with nose job:

· Post-op bleeding is a rare risk and you do not need a medical treatment if it happens.

· Infections are uncommon. But if they occur, they may require a doctor’s assistance to drain pus.

· Fibrous bands or adhesions may form. They obstruct breathing and require surgical removal.

· External skin may become shapeless and as a result tip may become round and loose break (a deformity known as parrot beak). It happens due to over-trimming of cartilage framework.

· In other cases, a saddle nose, porcine nose or a pinched-tip nose may appear due to some wrong measures during the surgery.

· Difficult breathing or whistling breathing due to an accidental septal perforation during the surgery.

  1. If your surgeon offers financing, you should meet at least once with an office manager to discuss your options.
